In order to determine her future, Fa-ling must unlock the mysteries of her past. To this end, she travels with a Canadian adoption group to the exotic southern province of Guang-Xi Zhuang.
Searching for her lost heritage, Fa-ling encounters murder, kidnapping, political intrigue and organ theft. Together with Detective Wang Yong-qi and his brilliant but uncouth partner Cheng Minsheng, Fa-ling must uncover a high-stakes kidnapping plot -- before another child goes missing!
Donna Carrick grew up in Canada's military, and now resides in Southern Ontario with her husband author Alex Carrick and their three children. Along with their beloved family pets, the Carricks spend most of their free time in Ontario's North Country.

Beautiful story, beautifully written March 2, 2010 Lori Osterman (Oregon, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow, I have to say this book is wonderful. There is so much detail it's as if I am right there every step with the characters. I fell in love with Fa-ling and was so entrenched in her journeys that I couldn't put the book down. The Author Donna Carrick not only did her research, very well, she made me feel every heart breaking turn that Fa-Ling was experiencing. Even trying to write this review I find myself wanting to go into detail the highs and lows of each experience Fa-Ling found herself in. Any book that can keep me glued to its pages, and act as if the story is playing out as a movie in my head, deserves high praise and to be read by all. I don't wish to ruin the story for you but I do recommend you read 'The First Experience'. The imagery, the adventure and the emotion that was poured into writing this book is definitely evident through out the pages. You do not want to miss this story.
The First Excellence is first riate March 9, 2010 Sara (Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a well crafted adventure Donna Carrick creates for the reader. She creates an exciting ride that is full of intrigue, mystery and thrills. The details, oh the details. So many layers, such depth. The characters are unique and identifiable. I really wanted Fa-Ling and Yong-qi to be together. Cheng is also a favourite as is Shopei.
I encourage anyone who is looking to read an intelligent and thrilling novel to pick up The First Excellence. It will be hard to put down.
A thrilling story November 2, 2009 J. H. (Virginia) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The First Excellence is a great story. I could hardly put it down. It is apparent that a lot of research went into writing the book. Not only is the story itself compelling, but there are fascinating references to the idiosyncracies of travel in China and the process of adopting Chinese orphans. The story burrows into some of the dark secrets of living in Communist China--not everyone gets out alive. The ending is a surprise!
Read it! You'll be glad you did!
Haunting imagery January 11, 2010 Rosalind M. Croucher (Toronto, Canada) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Loved this book for it's compelling family ties and the inner lives of the characters. The author's beautiful imagery in her writing stays with you long after you've read it. Definitely recommend!
Amazing Must Read! March 20, 2010 {indie}pendent books (New York) I must admit I fell in love with this book from the first two paragraphs. It grabs your attention and doesn't let go until well after you finish the book. The story manages to horrify, sadden, uplift, and inspire you in such a manner that you feel as if you need to step into the book.
This book is everything a book should be. You end up caring about every single character, whether it's good or bad, and they quickly become friends.
What I liked most about this book, is that even though it dealt with some controversial topics (being only allowed one child in China, the sex trade, and child kidnapping) it did it realistically. There was no fluff in this story to make it outrageous or pathetic. This book was written as if someone told the author their story. It was written with respect to the culture (even while dealing with the less than savory aspects. By doing this, Donna has created a book that will not only entertain us, but make us think about what others have to deal with.
Donna Carrick has what should be, and hopefully WILL become a best-seller. Everyone will love this book.
