Product Description Meet Buddy, the golden retriever who touches the lives of everybody he meets. The heartwarming, true story of an excessively mischievous dog that had been shuffled from owner to owner since no one could control his crazy behavior. He was on his way to meet his fate at the local shelter when a mere coincidence connected him with his current owners. While he no longer had to switch homes, the hilarious acts he committed, from ingesting bottle caps to barging into a stranger's house, caused his current owners to almost reconsider their decision.
Buddy was a dog that no one wanted, yet he became one of the quirkiest, friendliest, smartest and most cherished of dogs. The reader is not only drawn into the book, but learns from the unfortunate mistakes of others and how to think outside of the proverbial box. It gives the reader hope that if they are going through a similar ordeal, they can also successfully overcome any related obstacle.
If you are looking for a great gift for both dog lovers and even non-dog lovers, this book is perfect. Get ready to laugh a little and perhaps even shed a few tears.

Fun To Read April 10, 2010 Bill Karoshi (New York) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
A wonderful story about the energetic family dog. If you ever had a dog as a pet you would definitely relate to and enjoy the journey.
All Around GREAT Book July 29, 2010 Meredith (WV) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I love dogs, but am usually partial to books about German shepherds since I own two of them. A friend of mine suggested that I buy this book, even though it is about a golden retriever and I had to thank her. From the beginning of the book, I literally laughed out loud at the funny things that Buddy did. By the end of the story, I felt as if I knew him and had to read the book a second time- I enjoyed it THAT much. It seemed that Elizabeth was careful enough to give the full description of his personality and cleverness, without including any extra, unnecessary fluff. Anyone who has owned or loved a dog or is thinking about adopting one will love this book. I lent it to my cousin who is NOT a "dog person" and she even loved it!
What is also great about this book is that the author is donating some of the proceeds to a rescue group.
Heartfelt and Funny Dog Book August 1, 2010 John (Alabama) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is the first review I have written but felt compelled to do so. I have owned dogs my entire life and also volunteer a great deal of my time at an animal shelter. I have seen what being in a shelter can do to a dog or how dogs that are shifted around can "act up." They don't have that trust factor that goes along with getting adopted at a younger age.
This book clearly defines the issues that can and do often arise. While the author brings comedy to a managing a difficult dog, many times those same type of dogs wind up back in the shelter, being labeled as a special needs dog. It doesn't mean they are not good dogs; they just need someone to show them love and give them guidance.
The author's ordeals with Buddy hit very close to home. I love the way Ms. Parker describes her first reaction to Buddy and then you get an inside look of how they made the transition from just dog owners to becoming a family.
It is such an easy read and I had to actually laugh out loud at a lot of the parts. As many other dog books are tear jerkers, the author visibly states how she did not want this book to be one of them, as she wanted to end the book on a happy note; although it was still very touching.
The author makes a note that this is not a training manual, however, there were still some good tips on what to do or what not to do. She has no problem with admitting fault with training, as she describes the mistakes made along the way.
I lent this book to a good friend of mine who loves dog and has a golden retriever named Max that was adopted from a rescue organization. He said he found himself nodding his head in agreement as he was able to identify with so many different aspects of this book.
Overall, this is a wonderful, well written story with a lot of heart and soul. From what I read on the author's website, she is very much involved with dog rescue and her experience was portrayed in this book. The price for this book is also very fair especially since some of it is being donated to a rescue group. It is a good read for anyone, but if you are a true dog lover, (particularly if you have had dogs that are hard to manage), you will love this book.
Sweet Story August 10, 2010 Mary L. 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Have you ever owned a dog that would not listen no matter how hard you tried to apply your dog training techniques? Buddy is one of those dogs. From the first chapter of the book, you can sense the author's apprehension as her and her husband go to visit the dog.
From that point, the story only gets funnier as you start to wonder who is training who. Buddy takes the owners for the ride of their life and you can sense their frustration and embarrassment as the dog keeps maneuvering his way into things and creating new obstacles for his "parents" to figure out. I fell in love with Buddy's personality immediately.
I have never personally owned a dog that was so smart, but know some people that have and suggested they read this book. It tells of what NOT to do in certain situations and it does help if you are trying to get into your dog's mind.
It's not all comedy, as there are some sincere parts to the story where the author admits to loving this dog and appreciating his intelligence, friendliness and comical ways. It seems Buddy got lucky the day he found his family and by the end of the book, you can tell the family felt the same way about finding Buddy.
This is an easy read and so enjoyable. I'm glad I purchased it.
What a Pup! August 12, 2010 Tara C. 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read this in two days and could not help but laugh out loud at some of the things that this dog did to drive the owners to the point of insanity. The car ride home the first night had me laughing hysterically as I could just imagine the whole scene. It is wonderful that the owners continued to drive on, even with Buddy acting so crazy. I'm not so sure other people would do so if faced with the same circumstances.
I love the fact that he was such a free-thinking and, as the title states, free-spirited dog. It makes you wonder goes through some dogs' minds. In Buddy's case, it seems he just wanted to have a good time.
This is an easy read and one that I found to be very funny. It can be enjoyed by anyone who has loved a dog or needs some humorous tips about what not to do. It is also a great gift!
